This dataset contains bilateral power generation financing data from China, Japan, and the United States in the paper "Financing Carbon Lock-in in Developing Countries: Bilateral Financing for Power Generation Technologies from China, Japan, and the United States” by Xu Chen, Zhongshu Li, Kevin P. Gallagher, and Denise L. Mauzerall published in Applied Energy. This dataset is in the file: Bilateral-power-financing-dataset.xlsx This file includes overseas power generation financing data between 2000 and 2018 from six Chinese, Japanese, and U.S. national development finance institutions (China Development Bank, the Export-Import Bank of China, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the Export-Import Bank of the United States) and Chinese, Japanese, and U.S. foreign direct investment in power plants which occurred before the end of 2018. Development financing data includes power plants that were operating, under construction, and planned as of 2019, as well as power generation projects that are not identified at the plant level. Foreign direct investment data includes power plants that were in operation and under construction as of 2019. Part of our database utilizes proprietary data through subscription to the World Electric Power Plant (WEPP) Database from S&P Global Market Intelligence. We provide WEPP unit IDs for this data with permission from WEPP. Additional information from WEPP can be obtained using the power units’ IDs via subscription to the WEPP database. Column "WEPP unitID" may contain multiple values (separated by comma) because the financed power plant may contain several power generating units as documented in WEPP. Part of the data in columns "Power plant name", "Capacity (MW)", "Status", and "Commissioning year" is derived from the WEPP Database. Therefore, columns "Status" and "Commissioning year" may contain multiple unique values that correspond to the status and commissioning year of different power generating units.
